The first striking thing about the Lee Ann Womack album comes before you even open it. It's the gauzy cover image that evokes an old Tammy Wynette album. Heck, you can even buy this sucker on vinyl for that real old-fashioned feel.
Womack's sole songwriting credit comes on "Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago," about which she's said, "I feel like that was kind of my 'Tammy' song." Actually, there are several Tammy songs here, like "He Oughta Know That By Know." Even more Wynette-like is the cheating and regret of the title track ("the worst part of doing what I never should have done/Is that I know there's more where that came from"), a deeply country track that begins with that classic two-stroke fiddle chop.

Nothing else is quite as old-school as that opener, but Womack's voice makes sure it's all country as can be, even if a few of the songs lean a little toward pop. Splitting the difference between Dolly Parton and Wynette, Womack sounds like the good girl plagued by naughty thoughts. She's easily the best truly country female singer mainstream Nashville can claim these days.
