FRIDAY
Patty Loveless
Georgia-based Kentuckian Patty Loveless (right) was ahead of the return-to-traditionalism curve. Even in the ’90s, she never strayed far, but she went back to her bluegrass roots with 2001’s critically lauded “Mountain Soul.” This year, she revisited a different set of influences with “Sleepless Nights,” an album of country classics such as the Webb Pierce gem “There Stands the Glass” and Hank Williams’ “Cold Cold Heart.”

SATURDAY
Of Montreal
Athens’ Of Montreal released its debut album more than 10 years ago, but with last year’s “Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?” the band reached new heights, both commercially and artistically.
The band’s driving force (and at one time sole member), Kevin Barnes, keeps getting better, making psychedelically adventurous indie pop that is catchier and more cohesive with every passing year. Barnes and Co. recently released “Skeletal Lamping,” the follow-up to “Hissing Fauna,” which hit stores on Oct. 21.
9 p.m. Nov. 8. $19. The Tabernacle, 152 Luckie St. N.W., Atlanta. 404-659-9022, www.livenation.com.
Son de Madera, Quetzal
Son de Madera showcases the Son Jarocho musical tradition from Veracruz, Mexico. The group is based in Xalapa — sometimes spelled Jalapa and home of the jalapeño pepper — the capital of the state of Veracruz. Son Jarocho is probably best known for giving us the song “La Bamba.” Los Angeles’ Quetzal, also on the bill, plays a mix of Mexican and Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, R&B and rock.
8 p.m. Nov. 8. $32-$56. Rialto Center for the Arts, 80 Forsyth St. N.W., Atlanta. 404-413-9849, www.rialtocenter.org.
For Against
If not exactly a lost American link between Joy Division and the blustery British shoegaze of the early ’90s, Nebraska’s For Against is at least a pretty unheralded piece of the puzzle. The band’s first two albums, 1987’s “Echelons” and 1988’s “December,” were reissued a few years back, perhaps to catch the ear of Interpol fans who might think their heroes were the first U.S. band to plant a flag in this particular soil.
9 p.m. Nov. 8. $8. The EARL, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E., Atlanta. 404-522-3950, 1-800-594-8499, www.badearl.com.
TUESDAY
Tim Reynolds, Shaun Hopper
Reynolds is a virtuoso guitarist best known for his work with Dave Matthews. The fleet-fingered Reynolds’ most recent solo album, 2005’s “Parallel Universe,” is a two-disc set. More recently, he teamed up with Matthews again for “Live at Radio City,” another double-disc set recorded at the New York landmark in April 2007. For this gig, he’ll be accompanied by his band, TR3.
Hopper is a phenomenal young guitarist from South Georgia who crafts gently breathtaking acoustic instrumentals. Unlike many preternaturally talented guitarists, Hopper is never flashy. It’s immediately obvious how proficient he is on his instrument, but it’s not because he’s showing off. It’s because he creates and plays beautiful tunes that reach in and wrap themselves around your heart.
8 p.m. Nov. 11. $15 advance. Smith’s Olde Bar, 1578 Piedmont Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-875-1522, www.smithsoldebar.com.
