True Colors in a wide range

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/12/2008

"THE GOAL OF GAY, LESBIAN, bisexual and transgender equality is at the heart of True Colors," according to the Web site for the tour that comes to Chastain Park Amphitheatre this week. In honor of that, here is a playlist, just about CD length, that moves beyond the usual suspects to musicians who are unhampered by the old definitions of "gay music." It begins with the performers on the True Colors tour — Cyndi Lauper, the B-52s, Tegan and Sara, and the Cliks — and you won't find a single dancefloor anthem.

Songs with a gay sensibility aren't all diva-wailing-over-big-beat, tragic and torchy old standards or an earnest female folk singer warbling over an acoustic guitar. Gay artists — and quite a few sympathetic non-gay musicians — are moving the musical goal posts, making music that covers a wide range of genres.

Cyndi Lauper will lead the True Colors tour into Chastain Park on June 16 – and maybe try to show it's not just 'gay music.'
