YOU COULD CALL rock and country kissing cousins. They're definitely related and they've been doing an awful lot of canoodling lately, including the musical meeting of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Who would have thought that a duet album from the former Led Zeppelin frontman and the angelic country/bluegrass sweetheart would even happen? Even more amazing, "Raising Sand" is a beautiful piece of work that landed on many a year-end best-of list for 2007.
The pair is touring, including a sold-out Chastain Park Amphitheatre gig this week, so we thought we'd take a look at some other instances where country met rock, some good, some bad, some a little strange.

Bon Jovi / Jennifer Nettles
Georgia's own Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland teamed up with New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi for "Who Says You Can't Go Home," which hit the top of the country charts in 2006 and won a Grammy for best country collaboration.
Jack White / Loretta Lynn
The White Stripes' Jack White dialed down the squealing guitars of his band to produce Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose," an album that brought back some of the grit and power that distinguished Lynn's best work.
Sammy Hagar / Kenny Chesney
The former Van Halen singer will be on the bill for part of Kenny Chesney's summer tour this year (including the July 13 Turner Field date), but what do Sammy Hagar and Chesney have in common? Perhaps it's their well-documented fondness for tropical climes and ability to sell alcohol. (Hagar has his own brand of Tequila and Chesney's tours have been sponsored by both Corona and Cruzan Rum.)
Garth Brooks / Kiss
Garth Brooks is a big Kiss fan and he got to do a version of the band's "Hard Luck Woman" on tribute album back in 1994. He's also performed the song with the band, and you can see it online. (Just Google Garth Brooks and Kiss, and it'll pop up on the first page.)
Elvis Costello / George Jones
Costello covered Jones' "A Good Year for the Roses" on his "Almost Blue" album, and the pair collaborated on a version of "Stranger in the House" on Jones' duet album "My Very Special Guests."
Taylor Swift / Def Leppard
This one hasn't happened yet, but country music network CMT has announced that teenage country hitmaker Swift will perform with the British hard rockers this fall for another installment of the "Crossroads" series. Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" hit No. 2 on the pop chart back in 1988, about a year and a half before Swift was born. The whole idea behind "Crossroads" is to bring together rock and country acts. In the past, the network has paired Sara Evans and Maroon 5, Little Big Town and Lindsey Buckingham and John Mayer and Brad Paisley.
