Berry, a 23-year-old music promoter, is accused of gunning down Dolla, whose real name was Roderick Anthony Burton II, in the valet parking area of the Beverly Center.

Berry’s attorney, Howard Price, said his client was acting in self-defense when he shot 21-year-old Dolla repeatedly with a 9 mm handgun.

Dolla’s stepfather, George Viera, said the rapper was in Los Angeles planning a birthday party for his longtime girlfriend.

The rapper was a protege of hip-hop star Akon and recently released two songs with the artist.
