Here’s what’s new at Stone Mountain

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Trying to chisel a slab of metro Atlantans’ “staycation” business as school lets out, Stone Mountain Park has loaded up on new features and deals for what it calls Summer at the Rock.

Here’s a look at what’s fresh at the metro area’s favorite granite outcropping:

Attractions

• Dinosaurs, seemingly hotter than ever, and other scary things lurk in “Journey to the Center of the Earth 4D Adventure,” a 12-minute film condensed from the 2008 Brendan Fraser feature. It’s new at Crossroads.

• There are two new interactive shows: “Wonders of Nature,” features up-close encounters with flying squirrels, birds and snakes. “Big Thinkers Science Exploration Show” unravels natural mysteries. Both at Crossroads.

• The Lasershow Spectacular’s new segment is a tribute to Georgia musicians, including Otis Redding, Little Richard, Indigo Girls, OutKast, R.E.M., the Allman Brothers Band and James Brown. Free with park admission.

• Organized by the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon, “Our Music Is Georgia Music,” an exhibit at the Memorial Hall and Museum from May 30 to Aug. 2, showcases items such as a Little Richard outfit and vintage instruments from Savannah’s Gretsch Guitars.

• Green Scene, a new Crossroads store, sells gardening and birding supplies and yard decorations.

(Except for the Lasershow, visitors must have an Adventure Pass — $26 adults, $21 ages 3-11, to access shows and attractions.)

Deals

• With the Family Value Pass ($109 plus tax), guests save 20 percent on four one-day tickets and four meals.

• Family Escape Packages at the park’s two Marriott hotels begin a $169 (plus tax) and include park tickets for two days.

• A new Ready, Set, Camp! service offers a camping adventure sans the set-up aggravation. Drive up to your campsite in the Family Campground, and your four-person tent, four sleeping pads and lantern will be ready. $99, not including $25-$45 site rental.
