“Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” by Andre Jordan; Harper Perennial; $10
This modest collection of humorous- black line drawings and bitter quips about loss and alienation is salve to the wounds of the lonely. “Take it, dear Maker, for I don’t want it anymore” accompanies an outstretched hand holding a heart. “I miss you” are the words below a simple sketch of an ashtray holding a burning cigarette. “When you are lonely life goes on and on and on and on and on” are the words beneath a sad-faced stick figure. Individually they don’t sound like much, but altogether it’s a touching and ultimately optimistic graphic memoir about Jordan’s depression and recovery.
