Fresh crops draw crowds to farmers markets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wednesday, May 13, 2009
Spring is here, and we’re fast moving into summer. Get up early Saturday and enjoy one of the area’s farmers markets — spring crops of sugar snap peas and strawberries are starting to arrive, along with lettuces and greens just right (and ripe) for light spring meals. Here are three of the area’s biggest, but more are listed at www.ajc.com (search for farmers markets).
Morningside Farmers Market
1393 North Highland Ave., Atlanta, www.morningsidemarket.com
Morningside offers some of the freshest fun the city has to offer, from chef demos (from April to November) to baked goods from Magnolia Bread Company and meats from Riverview Farms. Blueberry pancake breakfasts and tomato tastings are part of the market’s upcoming events. Other local, organic farms at the market include Crystal Organic Farms and Woodland Gardens, just outside of Athens.
Peachtree Road Farmers Market
2744 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, www.peachtreeroadfarmersmarket.com
The parking lot of the Cathedral of St. Philip is transformed every Saturday morning into a market with fresh produce with offerings of everything from bok choy to watermelon, depending on the season, as well as fresh-cut flowers and goodies from local producers and crafts people.
Marietta Square Farmers Market
4 North Park Square, Marietta, www.mariettasquarefarmersmarket.com
Smack in the middle of the Marietta’s historic town square, this market draws hundreds of hungry vegetable hounds each week. Lured by potatoes, onions, tomatoes, squash and beans, customers stick around all morning for local honey, herbal soaps, whole grain breads, fudge pies, jelly, jam and preserves. Fresh plants and freshly squeezed lemonade are draws, too.
