3 Fun Things

By Jon Waterhouse

For the AJC

MABLETON

Fall Festival at Riverview Landing

Jamestown Properties is dubbing this event an “urban hoedown,” and it all flows together along the banks of the Chattahoochee River. It begins kicking its heels Friday evening with a conglomeration of indie rockers. The Constellations, Sealions and Turf War each offer sets. Hot-air balloon rides ($10 each), a hairy man contest and bonfires round out the evening. The festivities continue into Saturday with a bevy of food trucks, more than 40 vendors, a barbecue contest and a second helping of live music. Younger ones can dive headfirst into activities including face painting, hay slides and a corn maze. Leashed canines are invited, and if you’d like to bring home a pup, Mutt Madness will be offering puppy adoptions.

6-11 p.m. Sept. 28; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 29. Sept. 28 concert: $10 advance; $15 at the door. Free admission Sept. 29. Riverview Landing, 6271 Riverview Road, Mableton. www.ticketalternative.com.

STONE MOUNTAIN

“Lewis Grizzard: In His Own Words” at ART Station Theatre

The wit and perspective of Grizzard, the late and lauded AJC scribe, have been coming back to life at ART Station for the past 11 seasons. It all happens courtesy of actor Bill Oberst Jr., who channels Grizzard by dipping into the writer’s stand-up comedy material and grabbing pages from Grizzard’s books and columns. The performer’s separated-at-birth resemblance to Grizzard helps seal the deal. Oberst holds the distinction of selling out more than 850 performances throughout the country.

8 p.m. Sept. 28-29; 3 p.m. Sept. 30. $29; $24 students and seniors. ART Station Theatre, 5384 Manor Drive, Stone Mountain. 770-469-1105, www.artstation.org.

ROSWELL

The Wood Brothers at Roswell Cultural Arts Center

Brothers Oliver and Chris Wood continue their musical bloodline of a roots-inspired fusion of blues, folk and rock. Chris, one-third of popular indie trio Medeski, Martin & Wood, holds down the bass while Oliver wields the ax. Locals may recognize Oliver Wood from his stint as guitarist in blues-based outfit King Johnson. The duo’s debut Blue Note Records release, which arrived in 2006, featured John Medeski behind the boards. Their latest disc, “Live, Vol. 1: Sky High,” captures the Woods in their natural habitat: the concert stage.

8 p.m. Sept. 28. $27. Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forrest St., Roswell. 770-594-6232, www.roswellpresents.com.
