Costumed characters race beds around Gwinnett Courthouse

By Nelson Hicks

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. —

The streets around the Gwinnett County Courthouse turned into a raceway Saturday as Family Promise of Gwinnett County hosted its fourth annual Bed Race.

Two dozen teams participated in the race. The groups helped to raise funds for Family Promise, built beds, found a driver and four pushers and made their way to the big event.

"It's about having some fun, but addressing a serious issue at the same time," Carol Love Karp from Family Promise of Gwinnett County told Nelson's News. "We just want to bring awareness to the community that there are homeless people in Gwinnett and we're just trying to get more support for our shelter to be able to continue and just to get more people involved as well."

Family Promise not only organized the event, but for the first time built a bed to take part, too. Its entry was joined by other such as the Dark Knight Rises, Bed of Moses, Holy-Rollers, Pigs in a Blanket and a team from Channel 2 Action News.

Winners were given awards in categories of original design, funniest, people's choice and fundraising, outside of the speed awards for the adult and youth divisions.

WSB-TV's David Chandley served as the MC of the event.
