3 fun things in Atlanta, Smyrna, Marietta for Cinco de Mayo

By Jon Waterhouse

For the AJC

DOWNTOWN

Fiesta Atlanta at Centennial Olympic Park

The local landmark goes decidedly south of the border with this daylong Cinco de Mayo rave up. Internationally, nationally and locally known Latin music artists deliver some audio excitement. Mariachi Universitario, Conjunto Atardecer and Carina Aguilar are just a few of the performers scheduled across two stages. A 5K steps off at 9:30 a.m., and the last act hits the stage at 6:20 p.m. Along with the music you’ll find youth soccer clinics, free product samples from event sponsors, cultural arts and crafts, and fiesta-themed food.

10 a.m. May 5. Free. Centennial Olympic Park, 265 Centennial Olympic Park Drive NW, Atlanta. 404-350-0200, www.fiestaatlanta.com.

SMYRNA

Cinco de Mayo Festival at the Corner Taqueria

Those over 21 will be taking off their sombreros for this one. Outdoor party games, luge shots and more are set to take place. Some will brave the mechanical bull, while some watch the Braves game on TVs located outdoors. Others may simply saunter up to the margarita bar. Rolling mariachi bands and DJ Suspense provide the soundtrack.

2 p.m. May 4 and 5. Free. The Corner Taqueria, 2860 Atlanta Road, Suite C, Smyrna. 770-805-8204, www.thecornertaqueria.com.

MARIETTA

Cinco de Mayo at Los Agaves Mexican Restaurant

If your Cinco de Mayo holiday includes a fiesta with party favors of the liquid kind, Los Agaves can oblige. Pitches of Dos Equis and Coors Light beer are priced at $10.50 and $8.99, respectively. Some will be licking the salt off the rim of their regular margarita ($4.50), while certain folks spring a little extra for the Texas ’rita ($5.50). Groups can gather around a bucket of beers ($14.99), while the staff gives away T-shirts. Organizers suggest drinking responsibly and coating the tummy with one of the many Mexi meals on the menu.

Noon-10 p.m. May 5. Los Agaves Mexican Restaurant, 2125 Roswell Road, Marietta. 770-565-8919, www.losagavesmexicanrestaurant.com.
