Music to get wedded to? It’s your call

By Terry Morris

Staff Writer

When it comes to wedding music, it’s a matter of personal taste.

That said, weddings have a way of making many people more conservative with their choices, at least for a day.

Why else would so many songs your parents and even grandparents enjoyed end up being heard when you or your friends get married? You don’t listen to those songs at home or in your car.

We’re talking songs like these:

“I Got You Babe,” by Sonny and Cher.

“Chances Are,” by Johnny Mathis.

“A Groovy Kind of Love,” by Phil Collins. (Do you even say “groovy?”)

“Baby I’m a Want You,” by Bread.

“Annie’s Song,” by John Denver.

Closely associated with different styles of dances, here are some songs or variations that might be right in ceremonies using popular music.

Princess

You’re at ease with oldies that might have been written about you, so how about something country, perhaps “You Had Me From Hello,” by Kenny Chesney, or something by Rascal Flatts. Maybe “You’re in My Heart,” by Rod Stewart; “At Last,” by Etta James, or even “What a Wonderful World,” by Louis Armstrong.

Elegant

Modern love songs are your category. How about “Sign Your Name Across My Heart,” by Tarrence Trent D’Arby; “Perhaps,” from the soundtrack for “Strictly Ballroom”; “Falling Into You,” by Celine Dion, or “I Do,” by Paul Brant.

Off Beat

Cue up “Ready For The Good Times,” by Shakira; “Give Me One Reason,” by Tracy Chapman; “The Way You Love Me,” by Faith Hill; “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” by Ricky Martin; “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” by Luther Vandross; something by Earth, Wind and Fire or the Ohio Players.

Simple

Try a new take a classic, something like “A Wink and a Smile,” by Harry Connick Jr.; “L.O.V.E.,” by Nat King Cole; “Fly Me to the Moon,” by Frank Sinatra (or the same song, by Diana Krall); “You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You,” by Dean Martin; “Something’s Gotta Give,” by Sammy Davis Jr., or “World On A String,” by Peggy Lee.

Trendy

Pick a song, almost any song that fits the mood you like, by Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Christine Aguilera or Rihanna. In fact, how about one or more from each of them?

Wedding music is highly subjective. It should be up to you, so disregard any advice that rubs you the wrong way.

If you’re still at a loss, there are lists upon lists of the best wedding songs available on the Web. Here is just one top 10 list, for example: 1. “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing,” by Aerosmith; 2. “Everything I Do (I Do It For You),” by Bryan Adams; 3. “Amazed,” by Lonestar; 4. “You’re Still the One,” by Shania Twain; 5. “From this Moment On,” by Shania Twain; 6. "Have I Told You Lately,” by Van Morrison; 7. “You’re Beautiful,” by James Blunt; 8. “Truly, Madly, Deeply,” by Savage Garden; 9. “Angels,” by Robbie Williams,” and 10. “I Will Always Love You,” by Whitney Houston.
