Two downtown Atlanta businesses have partnered to help save the endangered whale shark, and they’re doing it through the power of beer.
Red Brick Brewing Co. and Georgia Aquarium created Whale Shark Wheat, an American-style wheat ale that has a “fruity tropical hop character,” according to a news release. A portion of sales will go towards Georgia Aquarium’s whale shark conservation efforts, including international research trips and equipment.
The aquarium’s research has helped complete the mapping of the first whale shark DNA genome using blood drawn from its whale sharks. Red Brick has also shown commitment to being environmentally-responsible; the brewery moved from bottles to cans in 2014, and uses can connectors made out of biodegradable material that is safer for ocean animals.
The summer brew will launch June 2 during a public event at Red Brick. Guests can taste the beer, tour the brewery and get a specialty Whale Shark Wheat pint glass for $12. The Peace of Pita food truck will be on-site, and guests will have the chance to win a Journey with Gentle Giants swim at the Georgia Aquarium.
Whale Shark Wheat is a limited-edition release and will be available on draft or in a take-home six-pack for $9 at Red Brick beginning June 2. It will be in select stores on June 5.
