Marietta ice skating rink: What you need to know for the 2017 holidays

There’s no need to go to Times Square, a 900-mile drive away, to ice skate with a perfectly good rink in Marietta Square this holiday season.

The rink will open for its third year in Marietta Square’s Glover Park on Nov. 17, according to Stephanie Coston, the event’s operations manager.

The ice skating rink will be on the southwest corner of Glover Park.  Aidan Thomas Hornaday/Special to The AJC

Skating, including the rental, costs $12.

The rink is scheduled to close Jan. 3, but the city extended that date last year to late February due to the popularity. Last year, it opened a couple of days late due to weather and technical difficulties that caused crews to tear up the ice less than a day before it was set to open.

The rink is part of the city’s Winter Wonderland celebration, which includes photos with Santa Claus and a tree lighting.

Santa’s arrival ceremony and the tree lighting will be Nov. 30, and pictures with the jolly man start the next day on Dec. 1. The online booking system to snag a time with the North Pole resident hasn’t yet opened.

Organizers said that the rink can be reserved for $500 at a maximum of 25 people, and it has to be before regular hours.

There’s been no word on holiday hours, but organizers have confirmed the rink will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving. It’ll be open on Christmas Day along with New Year’s Eve, though the hours have not been set.

Non-holiday hours of operation for the rink appear to be the same as last year and are listed below.

After it opens Nov. 17, here are the hours when school is in session:

» Monday to Thursday: 4:30 to 9 p.m.

» Friday: 4:30 to 11 p.m.

» Saturday: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

» Sunday: Noon to 8 p.m.

Hours when school is out:

» Monday to Thursday: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

» Friday to Saturday: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

» Sunday: Noon to 8 p.m.
