There are few labels worse than being pegged as “overrated,” but one Atlanta attraction has, unfortunately, been dubbed Georgia’s biggest tourist trap.
Business Insider’s INSIDER team put together a state-by-state listing of attractions they deemed “blatant attempts to make money” or “plain weird,” and included popular attractions such as Hawaii’s Waikiki Beach, California’s Hollywood Walk of Fame and Louisiana’s Bourbon Street.
Atlanta’s World of Coca-Cola, despite its Willy Wonka-esque tasting room filled with more than 100 international and domestic beverages, made the list for Georgia.
This huge tourist attraction in the middle of Atlanta brings in millions of visitors every year. Guests can see how the soda is bottled, take their picture with the famous polar bear, and taste several of the company's other drinks.
The tickets aren't too costly, with adult prices at $17 and children's at $13, but battling the overwhelming crowds and long lines just to walk through what is essentially a huge advertisement, is downright silly.
This isn’t the first time World of Coke has been called a huge tourist trap.
In fact, Travel and Leisure magazine wrote in a 2015 article that despite the beautiful museum and tasting room, the attraction is “a bit cliché,” ranking it the second most overrated attraction in Atlanta, after The Varsity.
And of the 182 readers who voted in the 2017 Best of Atlanta poll of best Atlanta tourist attractions, only six percent voted for the World of Coke.
But despite some of the recent painful reviews, the World of Coke continues to attract huge numbers.
And to celebrate its 10th anniversary at Pemberton Place, the museum is displaying work from 10 Atlanta artists who have put their spin on the iconic sculpted Coca-Cola bottles.
When asked for comment, World of Coca-Cola marketing manager Jacquie Wansley told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution she and the company are committed to offering new, exciting features for their guests.
