Father and son work on Russell's ReservePublished on: 06/29/2006
FATHER AND SON
Did Father's Day inspire you to spend more time with dad? Follow the lead of Master Distiller Jimmy Russell and son Eddie. Instead of a fishing trip or baseball game, the duo comes together to create the 90-proof Russell's Reserve. This 10-year-old, small-batch, limited-edition bourbon comes to life at the Austin Nichols distillery in Lawrenceburg, Ky. While Jimmy Russell supervises the distillation, his son prepares the bourbon in white oak barrels. At $28 a bottle, the result features tinges of vanilla, oak, toffee, white pepper and orange.
INFUSION FEVER
The infused tequilas at Sala-Sabor De Mexico (1186 North Highland Ave. N.E., Atlanta) are barfly favorites. The restaurant's chili infusion finds a mix of dried and fresh peppers soaking in a batch of Sauza Blanco tequila. Drinkers experience it in Sala's Bloody Maria. But the staff says the all-time favorite has to be the pineapple infusion, which pairs fresh pineapple with Sauza Blanco.
INFUSION NUMBER TWO
Two Urban Licks (820 Ralph McGill Blvd., Atlanta) boasts its own roster of homemade infusions. The Basil Lemonade, a melding of Absolut vodka, fresh-squeezed lemons, basil and simple syrup, is among the five offerings currently on the menu. The recipe for the Valencia Orange is simple — Finlandia vodka infused with Valencia oranges. And the Mo Pomegranate joins Bacardi rum, pomegranates, mint, simple syrup and lime juice.
