PUNCH ON THE PATIO
The only resemblance Alpharetta has to the tropics is probably the outdoor temperature. But Village Tavern (11555 Rainwater Drive, Alpharetta) offers a taste of the islands. Its Tavern Patio Punch is a mesh of two rums, gin, amaretto and the fruity flavor of grenadine and a duo of juices. Not bad for a bar staff of landlocked Atlantans.
ENTER THE DRAGONFLY
Upscale Chinese chow house Sampan (1198 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta) brings some Asian flair to its martini list. Selections include the Dragonfly, a melding of gin, dry vermouth and ginger brandy. Others are christened with appropriate names, too, like Confucius (vodka and ginger brandy) and the Whampoa Club (gin, sambuca and lime juice).
PIE IN THE SKY
Bob Amick and Todd Rushing, the minds behind One Midtown Kitchen and Two Urban Licks, strike again with Pie Bar (2160 Monroe Drive, Atlanta). This time, they've taken over the circular, neo-'60s structure that was once the Trust Company Bank building. And with it comes a concise cocktail list. A standout is the Suntini, which hits the palate with the refreshing briskness of a classic Mai Tai. Vodka, gin, rum, bourbon and a basil-infused simple syrup join splashes of Coke and pineapple juice.
