On the heels of the homeowners moving into the growing Cumming community are the restaurant owners such as Judy Michael. Along with her son, chef Peter Hung, and her extended family, Michael saw the need for more sushi and curry, and opened Pacific Spice, an Asian-inspired restaurant on Bethelview Road.

"We had another place near Woodstock, but we are regular taxpayers in this neighborhood now," Michael said with a laugh. "So we built this place from the ground up. This area still needs places where people can feel at home."

Three cuisines

Take your pick from the main dining room or the sushi bar, where you'll find salmon and tuna rolls, California and cucumber rolls, and the favorite Volcano Lava — crab, cucumber and avocado.

Then pick the cuisine that suits your mood. The Chinese menu goes from mild teriyaki chicken, steaks, shrimp or scallops to spicy salt and pepper sea bass and crispy whole fish in Hunan sauce. Don't want to get fancy? There are always fried rice, lo mein, egg rolls, Mandarin short ribs and sweet and sour dishes. Japanese selections give the teriyaki treatment to chicken, steak and salmon and the tempura batter on vegetables, chicken and shrimp. Thai options include starters of spring rolls and satay chicken and move into red snapper, basil lamb and grilled rib-eye. There's also a selection of noodle and rice bowls.

The most popular items are the curries. Red and yellow are the runaway favorites for chicken, pork or shrimp. Other options are green, Panang and Massaman curries.

The extensive menu has something even for finicky kids who would rather have good old chicken nuggets and fries instead of chicken or beef teriyaki skewers.

From the bar

A modest selection of mostly American wines is poured by the bottle or glass. Asian and domestic beers are in the bottle. And for a change, try the hot sake.
