Yes, it's January and all those well-intentioned resolutions about losing weight are still in your mind. But sometimes you've just got to sate that burger craving. The owners of the new Canyons Burger Co. in Woodstock make that easy to do, while tossing in a few waistline savers.
"We're not trying to say we're healthy," partner Nick Binnings said with a laugh. "But we are trying to make the connection to being outdoors and active. The pictures on our walls are of people skiing, biking, hiking and rock climbing. If I didn't have to work, you'd find me out in a Jeep or fishing. The idea is to just have fun and to do something really well, which is what we want to do with our food."

The fun takes place in a sleek, contemporary dining room where three walls of glass look out over the new condos and shops going up in downtown Woodstock. The wood tables and booths sit atop shiny concrete floors inside, and when warmer weather arrives, there will be room on the front patio as well.
Meaty options
The anchor of Canyons' simple menu is a handmade Black Angus burger on a toasted bun. Diners line up in front of the open kitchen and order their favorite toppings and sides. There's also a selection of specialty burgers, topped with bacon, Swiss cheese and mushrooms, barbecue sauce and grilled onions or blackened seasonings and blue cheese. A "box of rocks" is a set of four sliders topped with mustard, pickles and grilled onions.
Those not in the mood for meat may opt for the portabello burger, a marinated mushroom cap with provolone cheese on a wheat bun. Turkey burgers with Swiss cheese are another low-fat option, as are the garden or grilled chicken tender salads. Three- or five-piece chicken tender plates come with coleslaw, Texas toast and dipping sauce.
Sides are crinkle-cut or sweet potato fries, fruit cup, slaw and cookies. Kids can pick from two mini-burgers, chicken nuggets or grilled cheese.
From the bar
The help-yourself beverage bar is stocked with tea and sodas. A refrigerator case holds domestic and imported bottled beers. And what goes better with a burger than a milkshake? Order chocolate, vanilla or strawberry.
In the pipeline
The Woodstock location is the first of several Canyons the owners expect to open in the coming months. Look for future locations in Brookhaven, Sandy Springs and Midtown.
