Wednesday will be a busy day for dining, and it can all be for a good cause. So plan carefully to fit everything in.
Throughout the day, Dining Out for Life participating establishments will donate 20 percent of their proceeds to Project Open Hand, a nonprofit organization that provides meals for those too ill to feed themselves. Among the Northside spots on the list are Rumi's Kitchen and Nancy G's in Sandy Springs; Casa Nuova in Cumming; Garrison's and Sia's in Duluth; and Hudson Grille in Alpharetta. For a complete list, call 404-419-3333 or go to www.projectopenhand.org.
Also on Wednesday, the Five Seasons Brewing Co. in Alpharetta hosts a dinner that celebrates Earth Day. Dubbed "What Grows Together Goes Together: A Taste of Our Local Bounty," the meal features five courses prepared by chef David Larkworthy using all local ingredients. Each dish will be paired with local wines. The $75 event begins at 7 p.m. at 3655 Old Milton Parkway; 770-521-5551; www.5seasons brewing.com.
• In the same Earth Day spirit, there's a lot happening at Harry's in Roswell. At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, bring the kids to a conservation class that will offer tips on how to save water. Each participant goes home with a rain gauge and coloring book. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, learn how to go green with your own compost pile by using compost instead of commercial fertilizers to keep your yard in top shape. Register to attend both events at the store's customer service desk, 1180 Upper Hembree Road; 770-664-6300.
• All that pollen blanketing the metro area isn't the only sign of spring. At the Loafing Leprechaun in Alpharetta, it's the outdoor party on the patio that says warm weather has arrived. From noon to midnight on Saturday, the Spring Fling party will feature live music, drink specials and giveaways. It's also staying open longer on weekends to help you get the most out of your free time. Drop by from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and from noon to 11 p.m. on Sunday. The Leprechaun is located at 3070 Windward Plaza; 770-817-8600; www.loafingleprechaun.com.
• Spring also is time for the annual show of Van Gogh-inspired artworks at Bistro VG, the former Van Gogh's in Roswell. This is the seventh year that the restaurant has welcomed the works from students of the You've Gotta Have Art studio nearby. They've decorated the bistro's walls with their take on famous Van Gogh pieces. This year, art teacher Becky Wilson let the kids — some as young as 5 — pick their own favorite to copy.
"We have 34 students who are part of the program, and of course, 'Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night' are always the most popular," she said.
Check out the art from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday. Bistro VG is located at 70 W. Crossville Road; 770-973-1156; www.knowwheretogogh.com.
