WORTH NOTING

Two wins on Lake Varner

Ken Duke and Russell Brown were feeling pretty good about their showing in last weekend's Johnboat Bass Association tournament on Lake Varner. The pair had a JBA-record 30.10-pound stringer (five bass) weighed in, a catch that included a 9.5-pound largemouth. Then Mike Meason and Mike Smith strolled to the scales. Their 30.80 pounds broke the circuit's record for the second time in a day, marking the second week in a row that Meason was party to a winning catch at the Covington reservoir. Meason and a partner caught 29.19 pounds in a Southern Jonboat Anglers event at the lake.

73 pounds worth $100K

Edwin Evers stayed put in rising waters to win his first Citgo Bassmaster Tour event last weekend at Lake Eufaula. His four-day total of 73 pounds, 5 ounces (20 fish) won him $100,000 and established the biggest stringer after five tournaments. Evers, of Mannsville, Okla., stayed with the areas he found in practice rounds, while many other anglers moved with the water rising from recent rains. Charlie Hartley of Grove City had a 70-3 total for second place. Michael Johnson of Talking Rock (49th place) was Georgia's top finisher. . . . The Bassmaster Tour cuts its field to the 100 top anglers (based on points standings) after next weekend's event on Santee-Cooper, S.C., Reservoir. Five Georgians are currently in the top 100: Tom Mann Jr., Buford, sixth; Allen Armour, Jonesboro, 68th; Jody Cordell, Buford, 69th; Danny Kirk, Bartow, 74th; and Johnson, 90th.
