Black Rock Mountain State Park
Black Rock gets its name from the dark cliff faces, boulders and outcroppings scattered throughout the park. Numerous scenic overlooks provide spectacular 80-mile vistas of the Southern Appalachians -- and its hiking trails afford close-up views of wildflowers, streams and lush forests.
Degree of Difficulty: Three trails: Ada-Hi Falls Nature Trail (moderate); Tennessee Rock Trail (moderate); James E. Edmunds Backcountry Trail (moderate to strenuous)
Fees: $3 parking fee
Hours of operation: Open 7 days/week;
Park: 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; Office: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
How to get there: Go north on U.S. Hwy 441 to Black Rock Mountain Parkway, 3 miles north of Clayton. Look for brown directional signs in Mountain City.
