Definition:

An abortion in which a portion of the fetal or placental material is retained within the uterus. Typical symptoms include vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal cramping.

An incomplete abortion often requires surgical intervention to remove the remaining material from the uterus and prevent hemorrhaging, prolonged bleeding, or infection. See also complete abortion, infected abortion, miscarriage.
