Host an affordable Super Bowl Party

By Nedra Rhone

Planning a Super Bowl gathering this weekend? So is everyone else.

According to a survey from Century 21, 84 percent of Americans plan to watch the big game from the comfort of their homes or the homes of friends and family. And 72 percent of those surveyed said food and drink are the most critical factors in a successful game day party.

That’s a lot of pressure for a hostess on a budget.

While this year brings discounts on items such as big screen televisions, it has brought price increases on a few other Super Bowl party staples.

NerdWallet.com says chicken wings will cost more, according to the USDA. Frozen party chicken wings were averaging $2.52 as of Jan. 10, up from $1.97 a pound during the same time frame in 2012. So if you’re planning a party on a budget, avoid the chicken wings and consider these ideas:

Make a multitasking main dish. Chili is a Super Bowl party staple. Serve it by the bowl, over hot dogs or on baked potatoes and you get three meals in one. You may also want to consider asking guests to bring a dish for a potluck style gathering.

Shop dollar stores for decorations. Instead of getting pricey team branded decorations, shop dollar stores for balloons and streamers in team colors. Get kids invoved in the fun by letting them create their own decorations.

Don’t stress about dessert. According to the Century 21 survey, only 2 percent of guests care about dessert. Keep it low on your priority list.

Expand your snack search. Consider buying snacks at stores like CVS or Rite Aid instead of grocery stores. Check couponing websites for the best deals this week and shop accordingly...with coupons!

Wait ‘til last call for alcohol. Look for deals on beer this weekend and consult SaveOnBrew.com for sales in your area. Instead of serving wine, use cheap brands to whip up sangria and no one will know the difference.
