Friday Riffs: What is your favorite stadium concert?

U2's "Claw" made the band's "360" tour unforgettable.

[I'm on with my rock 'n' roll pal Kaedy Kiely at 97.1 The River every Wednesday at 6:50 and 7:50 a.m. to talk about the latest rock news. Tune in to hear what's up!]

They might not provide the cleanest sound or superior vantage points, but there is something thrilling about stadium concerts.

The energy of 30,000, 40,000, 60,000 people around you is intoxicating, and even if you have cruddy seats, you still wind up blissfully drunk on the shared adrenaline of your section-mates (or whatever else that might have cost 8 bucks a pop).

I’ve been fortunate to see most of the landmark stadium shows of the past 20 years. The Rolling Stones multiple times. Billy Joel’s “Last Play at Shea” and McCartney’s stand at Yankee Stadium. Bon Jovi opening the new Meadowlands (now MetLife) Stadium. U2 and Springsteen – most recently last fall in Philadelphia – and Roger Waters when he brought “The Wall” to Yankee Stadium in July.

My all-time favorite stadium tour is from the inaugural outing of Joel and Elton John’s “Face to Face” tour – specifically April 1995 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where I lived at the time.

It was the most magical night of concert-going I would experience until U2 healed the hearts of thousands with their Baltimore Arena show a month after 9/11.

The list of current acts capable of selling out stadiums is growing, but still lacking compared to the veterans. Dave Matthews Band can do it. So can Kenny Chesney and Jay-Z (although he’s usually had a partner, whether Eminem or now Justin Timberlake) and a handful of others, such as Jason Aldean. He’ll take the stage at UGA’s Sanford Stadium on Saturday for the first-ever concert held at the venerable football field (some production holds were just released if you’re looking for a ticket).

So in honor of Aldean’s accomplishment – he’ll also play Fenway Park and Wrigley Field this summer – let’s talk about stadium shows this week, as in, what are the best you’ve seen?

And for a little inspiration, here’s a cool roundup clip (starting at the one minute mark) of John and Joel from that first year of “Face to Face."
