Friday Riffs: How will you celebrate Record Store Day?

By Melissa Ruggieri

Last month I passed along word that R.E.M.’s “Live in Greensboro” would be released for Record Store Day.

Well, tomorrow is the day to celebrate actual living record stores, and R.E.M. isn’t the only band offering a specialty product or appearance to commemorate the day.

Look for vinyl from The Avett Brothers and Randy Travis (“Music from CMT Crossroads”), a special pressing of Big Star’s “Nothing Can Hurt Me,” the Dave Matthews Band’s “Live Trax Vol. 1” vinyl box and Willie Nelson’s “Crazy: The Demo Sessions” among dozens of options.

If you head to Decatur CD, they’ll open around 10 a.m. and The El Caminos will rock their outdoor stage at noon. Over at Criminal Records, Von Grey is releasing the limited edition live album “Live at Criminal Records 01.01.13” on vinyl (it also comes with a digital download). Fans who purchase the release will have access to a private show Saturday night at the record store.

Other local participants in Record Store Day include Fantasyland Records, Wax ‘n’ Facts, CD Warehouse, Rock Shop Music and Comics and Moods Music/Little 5. But make sure to check out the official Record Store Day link for a statewide listing as well as the catalog of special releases.

And here's a good read about the state of vinyl.

How are you planning to celebrate RSD this year?
