Tuesday Tunes: Spotlight on Michael Bublé

By Melissa Ruggieri

Michael Bublé is so likeable that even his adequate work is elevated thanks to his easygoing approach.

“To Be Loved,” his sixth (non-holiday) studio album, is an agreeable collection of standards and four new tunes co-written by the Canadian crooner. Is it dynamic? No, especially not the new songs, which all, in their own way, are sweet and catchy but also featherweight and trite.

But it’s harmless and pleasant and, frankly, a welcome diversion in our increasingly weighty world.

Although Bublé’s biggest U.S. chart success came a few years ago with the original “Haven’t Met You Yet,” his international appeal is founded on his abilities as a song interpreter – the Sinatra or Tony Bennett of his day.

No surprise, then, that Bublé’s most assured vocal performances come on such familiar pop baubles as “You Make Me Feel So Young,” his staccato delivery a mature complement to the song’s lyrics, and the playfully sexy Latin-jazz romp “Come Dance with Me,” which you could imagine Bublé singing at Ricky Ricardo’s Tropicana club, decked out in white tux and bow tie.

He also presents a couple of surprises, such as a sultry take on the Frank and Nancy Sinatra classic, “Something Stupid” with Reese “Do you know my name?” Witherspoon, who turns in an appealing, understated performance (fans of the actress know she can sing from her turn as June Carter in “Walk the Line”).

Bublé’s other duet partner is Bryan Adams, with whom he co-wrote “After All.” It’s hackneyed pop, sure, but it’s still well-produced and perfectly fits the vibe of the album.

Elsewhere, the 37-year-old song stylist trots through the jaunty piano refrain of Randy Newman’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and dabs the lyrics of “Young at Heart” with his delicate vocal touch in an arrangement that swoons with creamy strings and brushed snare drums.

“To Be Loved” might not be remembered as a watershed moment in Bublé’s career, but it leaks sunshine and contentedness from every refrain – and that’s worth a lot.
