Butch Walker is one of those musical treasures whose work is known by many but whose name is recognizable to few.
The Cartersville native, who has written and produced songs for Pink, Train, Gavin DeGraw, Fall Out Boy, Taylor Swift and Avril Lavigne, might gain a bit more mainstream recognition after the release of the musical documentary, “Out of Focus.”
The film debuted last year at the Nashville Music Festival and provides a glimpse into the life of the 43-year-old Walker. It will screen in Atlanta at 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Plaza Theatre, just before his sold-out show at the Variety Playhouse (fans in Washington, New York and Boston will also get a movie theater experience). If you miss the big-screen version, “Out of Focus” gets its digital debut on Sept. 17.
Walker, the long-ago frontman for Marvelous 3, has lived in California for years, but stays close to his Georgia roots. His 2011 memoir, “Drinking With Strangers: Music Lessons From a Teenage Bullet Belt,” is a highly recommended read, but if you want a primo musical dose of Walker and his Black Widows, check out the mini-movie video for his exhilarating “Synthesizers.”
