It’s not the first official single from Lady Gaga’s upcoming “ARTPOP” album – that would be “Applause,” which is due in a couple of weeks.
But social media and the online world were squawking Monday night over this “leak” of the song “Burqa,” ostensibly from “ARTPOP,” which will be released Nov. 11.
It’s a polarizing piece of work, even if you are a Gaga fan (and count me among them). But between bizarro lyrics – even for her – that begin with “I killed my poor friend, left her in the trunk on highway 10/ Put the knife under the hood/ If you find it, send it straight to Hollywood,” – and a clanging electro-beat, it’s all a bit migraine-inducing.
Bent guitar notes, maniacal laughter and a springy backdrop that eventually leads to a more conventional chorus (“Do you wanna see me naked, lover? Do you wanna peak underneath the cover?”) will likely make you cringe. But the song intrigued me enough to quickly listen a second and third time. And now I never hear it again.
