TODAY-SATURDAY
Patterson Hood
If you’ve never seen the Drive-By Truckers’ Hood in solo mode, here’s a great opportunity. You’ll get one night of solo acoustic performance (tonight) and one night with fellow Truckers Brad Morgan and Jay Gonzalez (Saturday). Expect to hear songs from his latest solo album, 2012’s country-tinged “Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance,” which draws from a writing project that dates to his pre-Truckers days.
10 p.m. Feb. 8-9. $25. Eddie’s Attic, 515 N. McDonough St., Decatur. 404-377-4976.
SATURDAY
Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, Eddie Levert, El DeBarge
Atlanta-based R&B vocalist Sweat helped launch a hit-making phenomenon with his 1988 Teddy Riley-produced debut “Make It Last Forever.” The merging of classic soul and hip-hop beats, called new jack swing, was a major pop-music force well into the ’90s. He’s joined by fellow new jack swing heartthrob Gill (who was also a member of New Edition) and Levert, lead singer of ’70s soul hitmakers the O’Jays (“Backstabbers, “ “Love Train”). Gill and Sweat were once bandmates with Levert’s late son Gerald in LSG. El Debarge, who hit the Top 10 with his family in DeBarge in 1985 with “Rhythm of the Night,” completes the lineup.
7 p.m. Feb. 9. $65-$80. Atlanta Civic Center, 395 Piedmont Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-658-7159.
Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis
The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer — arguably, jazz’s best-known living trumpeter — returns to Atlanta for a performance with a venerable ensemble that he serves as artistic director. The big band is celebrating its 25th anniversary with this tour.
8 p.m. Feb. 9. $30-$90. Atlanta Symphony Hall, 1280 Peachtree St. N.E., Atlanta. 404-733-5000.
SATURDAY-SUNDAY
Jonathan Richman
You’d never know it from listening to Richman’s childlike odes such as “Hey There Little Insect” and “I’m a Little Dinosaur,” but he was one of the prime influences on the punk explosion of 1976-77. It’s a good bet that more people have seen his turn as the roving troubadour and Greek chorus in the 1998 movie “There’s Something About Mary” than ever saw him perform live during the 25-year career that led him to that breakthrough. Richman spends a lot of time on the road, and he thrives onstage. In front of an audience, his simple, sincere songs communicate life’s joys and occasional pains with heart-on-the-sleeve directness.
8 p.m. Feb. 9-10. $15; $12 in advance. The Goat Farm, 1200 Foster St., Atlanta. 877-725-8849.
MONDAY
The Wedding Present
The clanging, hyperspeed pop of the Wedding Present brightened the late ’80s. After a period with Cinerama — a more subdued vehicle for his vivid tales of love, sex and obsession — frontman David Gedge revived the Wedding Present with “Take Fountain” in 2005. At this show, Gedge and his bandmates will play all of the Wedding Present’s stellar 1987 debut album “George Best” as part of the set.
8:30 p.m. Feb. 11. $15. The EARL, 488 Flat Shoals Ave. S.E., Atlanta. 404-522-3950.
TUESDAY
Old 97’s
These Texas boys get lumped in with the alt-country crowd, but they’re really just a quintessentially American rock ’n’ roll band. They share as much with the punky heartland racket of the Replacements as the deep country of Johnny Cash, the source of the band’s name (taken from Cash’s ’50s version of “The Wreck of the Old 97”). Like fellow hard-luck troubadour and Replacements leader Paul Westerberg, vocalist and songwriter Rhett Miller can be world-weary, flirtatious, lovesick and ready to party, often within the space of one song. This show revisits the band’s 1997 major label debut, “Too Far to Care.”
8 p.m. Feb. 12. $22-$25. Terminal West, 887 W. Marietta St. N.W., Atlanta.
THURSDAY
Lalah Hathaway
Where many contemporary R&B singers feel the need to over-emote and cram as many notes into each bar as possible, the daughter of late, great R&B singer Donny Hathaway just sings with warmth and ease. On her latest album, “Where It All Begins,” she reaches back into her father’s catalog for the cover art and the track “You Were Meant for Me.”
7:30 and 10 p.m. Thursday. $35; $32.50 in advance. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E., Atlanta. 404-524-7354.
