Buying a ticket on Ticketmaster will soon be easier

The days of deciphering migraine-inducing codes to purchase a ticket on Ticketmaster will soon be OERV.

Concert trade publication Pollstar reports that the mixed up letters that make us all nuts when trying to purchase a ticket – especially when a popular show goes on sale – will be phased out with easier-to-decipher puzzles.

The purpose of the annoyance known as “CAPTCHA” (which stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) is to deter automated systems used by scalpers from buying blocks of tickets when they go on sale.

CAPTCHA was developed by Carnegie Mellon computer scientists in 2000 and purchased by Google in 2009.

After running trials for several weeks, Ticketmaster will swap out the Google puzzles for easier ones from a New York start-up called Solve Media. Those using mobile devices will never encounter a pesky puzzle, as Ticketmaster will have its own technology to verify the user through a “push” notification to the device.

According to the Pollstar story, the time needed to solve the new puzzles will be halved, from about 14 seconds to about 7.

That will come in handy if the Rolling Stones anniversary tour ever materializes.
