Weird Al Yankovic is coming to town Sunday at Symphony Hall – because when you think accordions and parody songs, you think ASO, right?
If you’ve never seen Weird Al in concert, I’d say it’s something worth crossing off the bucket list. There’s always a ton of cool multimedia stuff – and he’s been doing some of these wacky things since the pre-LED screen days – and Al is a zany host, as you might expect.
But go mostly for the songs, because there isn’t an artist in modern pop history who can compare with his genius. Whether you’re 13 or 43, you’ve come in contact with a Weird Al Yankovic song because he’s skewered artists from The Knack to Madonna to Coolio to Lady Gaga.
We all have our favorite Al creations – and you’re welcome to share yours in the comments below – but here are a few of mine:
“I Lost on Jeopardy” (a goof on The Greg Kihn Band’s “Jeopardy”):
“White & Nerdy” (a takeoff on Chamillionaire’s “Ridin'" – Al’s version is actually more memorable):
“Like a Surgeon” (a classic “remake” of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”):
“Amish Paradise” (possibly his most brilliant reworking, of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise”):
“Fat” (Can you really have a Weird Al list without including his silly-fun recast of Michael Jackson’s “Bad”?):
