Toni Braxton and Babyface are the latest Broadway recruits to step into the “special guest star” role in “After Midnight,” the new musical celebrating the music of Duke Ellington and Harlem’s Golden Age.
The duo - which has had, and still sometimes has, ties to Atlanta -- will star in the show at Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre March 18-30.
Their role is currently filled by Fantasia through Feb. 9 and then k.d. lang Feb. 11-March 9. Dulé Hill (of the USA Network’s “Psych’) is the host of the show, which features a company of 42 singers, dancers and musicians including the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars, a 17-piece band hand-picked by artistic director Wynton Marsalis.
Braxton and Babyface will see a lot of each other this year. The will release their long-awaited “relationship” album, “Love, Marriage & Divorce,” on Feb. 4. The album’s first single, “Hurt You,” is currently a hit on Urban radio, having garnered nearly 1,800 plays last week, according to Mediabase.
