'Jesus Christ Superstar' arena tour canceled

It seemed like such an interesting idea.

Bring “Jesus Christ Superstar” back to arenas, where it originated in 1971, and stock it with a colorful cast including Sex Pistols legend John “Rotten” Lydon, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Brandon Boyd of Incubus and former ‘N Sync heartthrob JC Chasez.

But a big-scale revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical apparently didn’t garner the interest expected and the tour, including a June 16 stop at Philips Arena, has been canceled.

No official reason for the cancellation was given, but a quick glance of the ticket availability at several arenas on the tour showed a surplus of seats, even with most venues set up for smaller capacity.

Tickets purchased online and via telephone will be automatically refunded. Tickets purchased from outlets or the Philips Arena box office must be returned to that location for refund. Questions may be directed to 404-878-3000.

[Update: The New York Times received a response from producer Michael Cohl, who said that poor ticket sales prompted the tour cancellation. It's a great read.]
