Reese Witherspoon, arrested in Atlanta following a Friday traffic stop, has issued an apology.
The statement, released overnight Sunday through her publicist and reported by Entertainment Weekly and other outlets, is as follows:
“Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behavior.”
Witherspoon, in Atlanta filming the movie "The Good Lie," was arrested after her husband, James Toth, was pulled over early Friday.

"Mr. Toth's eyes were bloodshot and watery," the police report says. "I smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Mr. Toth's breath."
As the trooper began field sobriety tests on Toth, Witherspoon got out of the car and began arguing.
"Do you know my name?" Witherspoon asked the officer, according to the report. "You are going to be on national news."
Toth now faces a DUI charge while he wife was cited for disorderly conduct. There's a court hearing this morning that neither the actress nor her husband is expected to attend. She is in New York promoting her new movie, "Mud," as Us Magazine reports. She's shown here flashing a pinched smile on the red carpet; she didn't speak to reporters.
