Paula Deen's son and fellow television food personality Jamie Deen is in Atlanta today, demonstrating healthy recipes at the American Diabetes Association Expo at the Cobb Galleria Centre, which is going on until 3 p.m. today. Parking and admission are free.
Since our interview in advance of the event was scuttled by Reese Witherspoon's court hearing last week we took another run at it this morning.
"It's always a good thing when we can come out and support mom," said Jamie, whose mom has made significant lifestyle and diet changes since being diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Paula Deen's embrace of healthier choices has become a family activity.
"I've lost almost 50 pounds," said Jamie, noting that his brother Bobby and Paula's husband Michael also are paring down. "All four us us have come to the same place. People are motivated by different reasons."
He said that eating fresh foods, choosing spices rather than butter and salt to enhance flavor, and not eating past 6 p.m. have all contributed to his improved health.
"Instead of a cheeseburger, I'll have grilled chicken," he said. He also works in exercise here and there - taking the stairs, chasing after his kids.
"I lead a very active life," he said.
The star of “Home for Dinner with Jamie Deen” demonstrated a healthier gumbo recipe this morning and said he's been inspired by his mother's positive outlook despite her diagnosis.
"We're fortunate that my mom has the attitude that she's going to overcome anything," he said. "We want to have her around another 60 years!"
