PETA is upset over Beyoncé's Super Bowl costume, a racy leather getup that featured material made from python and iguana as well as cows.

"We would take a bet that if Beyoncé watched our video exposés, she'd probably not want to be seen again in anything made of snakes, lizards, rabbits, or other animals who died painfully," PETA told E! News.

(Far as we can tell Beyoncé's outfit was not made of rabbits).

PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, sometimes finds ways of interjecting celebrities into its press releases as way of generating headlines. They've enlisted a wide range of notables including Waka Flocka Flame, Bethenny Frankel, Pamela Anderson, Tommy Lee, Jennie Garth, Kelly Osbourne and Iggy Pop to appear in their ads. Here's a link to the galaxy of stars who have partnered with PETA over the years.

The organization also lauds Baltimore Ravens player Terrell Suggs for choosing not to wear fur. The linebacker is shown wearing shorts and tattoos in a poster that says "Ink Not Mink." The accompanying ad copy says, "Terrell Suggs has taken a timeout from tackling running backs to tackle fur. He may be one of the toughest linebackers in the NFL, but Suggs considers fur "cruel and evil" and will never cross the line by wearing it."

In the poster Suggs is holding what appears to be a regulation NFL football, which presumably would be made of leather like Beyoncé's outfit. Or maybe it was a stunt double for the photo. But it does appear to say "National Football League" on the side. (Does the NFL sanction pleather footballs? We'll effort that one.)

PETA does pull its punches at times. Rolling Stone once asked actress Jennifer Lawrence about a scene in "Winter's Bone," where her character skins a squirrel.

"I should say it wasn't real, for PETA," Lawrence told Rolling Stone at the time. "But screw PETA."

PETA responded with firm restraint. Their statement at the time read in part, "She's young and the plight of animals somehow hasn't yet touched her heart."
