Atlanta ping-pong palace challenges Susan Sarandon

Hey, exciting news. Susan Sarandon has come to Atlanta to play ping pong with local bon vivant bar owner Grant Henry.

Well, sort of. Kind of. Maybe. Um. We’ll see.

“I think it’ll happen,” Henry predicted.

Sarandon is in town working on “The Last of Robin Hood” about the late, legendary Hollywood actor Errol Flynn. The project stars Kevin Kline in the lead role. Conyers native Dakota Fanning plays Beverly Aadland, Flynn’s youthful paramour at the end of his life, and Sarandon plays Beverly’s mother, Florence Aadland.

(Click here for our interview with Sarandon regarding "Cloud Atlas," her last movie).

“Robin Hood” is Kline’s second movie project here in a matter of months. He just wrapped “Last Vegas,” a buddy comedy with Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro and Morgan Freeman, in December. Guess he likes it here.

Anyway, Henry is owner of Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium, a quirky Edgewood bar that seems to attract an occasionally famous crowd. Ben Stiller played there while he was in town filming last year’s bromantic sci-fi comedy “The Watch.” Owen Wilson stopped by last year while in town filming “The Internship” and lost his trucker hat to Henry in a match. Lady Gaga once tried to buy the bar’s Virgin Mary statue when she was in town. No dice. Henry wasn’t working that night, but the bartender on duty called to relay the entertainer’s request. The Blessed Mother stayed put. Sorry, Gaga.

In other words, Henry is usually pretty blase about his bold-name guests. But he has his heart set on going paddle-to-paddle with Sarandon, who has serious table-tennis cred. She’s part of a team backing SPiN Galactic, a group of ping pong social clubs with locations in New York, Milwaukee, Toronto and Los Angeles.

“Ping pong is having a moment, thanks in no small part to Susan Sarandon,” the Huffington Post declared in a recent piece.

So you can understand why Henry is eager to face off against Sarandon at his place. He’s been in touch with Sarandon’s folks and feels confident they’ll play while she’s in town.

“I’ve seen video of her playing ping pong,” he said. “I’ll probably get my (behind) kicked. I’m prepared.”
