Post-Oscars fashion commentary involved a slit that seemed to stretch from Atlanta to Hollywood. The gam-revealing gown worn by actress Naomie Harris was the creation of SCAD-Atlanta student MichaelBadger.
"When we were doing the fittings she was not moving, " he said. "I didn't realize that mid-stride it would be so revealing!"
Badger, a native of Ghana who chose SCAD to pursue his fashion-designing aspirations, won the chance to design for the red carpet by winning "Red Carpet Green Dress, " an international dress design contest. Competition judge Vivienne Westwood collaborated with Badger on the eco-friendly frock, which involved organic cotton, vintage glass beads and chocolate candy wrappers.
"The Oscars is the most huge red carpet event in the world, " Badger said. "To see the dress was phenomenal."
Harris, most recently seen in the latest James Bond movie, "Skyfall, " also appeared in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Next for her is a role in the Nelson Mandela biopic "Long Walk to Freedom, " in which she will play Winnie Mandela.
Strolling the carpet in Badger's gown, she got lots of attention, much of it focused on that here-to-there slit.
"As she twisted and turned for the cameras on the red carpet the British star only narrowly avoided showing her underwear, " the Daily Mail observed.
We asked if Badger plans a line of couture underwear that actresses can wear with his future creations to avoid any unfortunate wardrobe malfunctions. Or perhaps he'd like to collaborate next with Angelina Jolie, whose leg pose during the 2012 Oscars spawned a spoof Twitter account?
"The slit will be a one-off, " Badger said with a laugh.
And even though his work has walked the red carpet, he hasn't gone Hollywood. Who would he like to design for next?
"Anybody that will have me!"
