Now I’ve interviewed Candy Crowley on the air a couple of times, and I’ve found her to be completely pleasant and professional. But about last night …
WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?
I mean, really? You’re supposed to be moderating a debate, and suddenly you feel compelled to weigh in on the side of one of the combatants? And to top it all off, you get it WRONG?
The issue between the candidates was whether or not Obama called the attack on the Benghazi consulate an act of terror the very next morning from the Rose Garden – before he headed to Las Vegas. Obama said he did. Romney said he didn’t. And then Candy Crowley felt compelled to step in and side with Obama --- and she was wrong. Obama did NOT say the attack on the consulate was a terrorist act. What he did say was that “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation.” Well, hopefully that’s right! But that was a statement of policy, not a description of what happened the night before in Benghazi. Obama clearly stopped short of calling THIS particular attack an act of terror. Sorry .. but that’s the way the English language works.
There were some doubts about Crowley before the debate. After all, she is the one who said that Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan to be his vice-presidential candidate was a “death wish.” We suspected her bias then. Now we know. In my experience it is totally unheard of for a moderator to interrupt to take the side of one candidate or another. Candy Crowley will never moderate another important debate.
