TV/radio briefs: 'Zombieland,' Matthew Morrison, Miss Sophia, 11Alive,

Zombieland new version
Amazon
"Zombieland," the new Amazon pilot, is being tested to become a series. You can view it and make your opinion heard. It was shot in Atlanta.

By Rodney Ho

Amazon recently shot a TV pilot "Zombieland" in metro Atlanta based on the 2009 movie.

This week, it has made the pilot available to the world. Feedback from viewers will determine if it will become a series.

The TV version does not include any of the actors from the film. They brought in largely unknown actors to fill those slots.

You can watch it here and judge for yourself.

Typically, broadcast networks tape pilots but don't show them to the public ahead of time to judge like this.

Unlike "The Walking Dead," this pilot is not set in Georgia. Atlanta masquerades as Los Angeles, though you can clearly see the Midtown Bank of America tower at one point. They actually work parts of downtown that "The Walking Dead' used season one.

It's a comedy, clear and simple. Deaths are for laughs. Everyone is awfully chipper - considering. The zombies are super fast, too. Given how quick they are, the four main characters should have been dead ages ago. But who cares, right? That's not the point of this show. There are references to Miss Pac-Man, Hot Pockets, Mark Zuckerberg, OnStar, Bobby Brady and Boggle. They keep running into survivors, who quickly die on their watch. "We are cursed!" said the dude (Kirk Ward) who plays Tallahassee (as in Woody Harrelson's role.)

My favorite moment: an old zombie tries to bite Columbus but has dentures so he survives.

Early feedback has been mixed. It has received 2.5 stars out of 5 from 71 reviewers.

A positive comment:

This is so funny. I love the actors and I love the pace. Who would of thought killing zombies could put you in such a good mood? Please make this a series.

Mixed comment from Nick Joseph:

I was very excited to watch this and the opening shot was amazing, but by the end of the episode I was very disappointed and felt like there really should have been a bit more character development and witty dialogue. I bumped this up to two stars because it started up right away as soon as I hit play.

And a slag:

Zombieland is poorly scripted. Poorly acted. And the zombie aspects are downright cheesy. Not to mention the kills are not even close to realistic. I'll be passing on watching this show. Poor pilot.

Fan of "Glee"? Matthew Morrison, who play Will Schuester on the Fox show, will be the keynote speaker at the 26th annual Human Rights Campaign gala dinner and auction May 4. The group works to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality. The event is held at the Hyatt Regency downtown. It raised $400,000 last year with 1,200 participants. Tickets are $200. You can buy them here.
