Frank Ski, who couldn't come to an agreement with V-103 last December after 14 years on that station, is trying out for an afternoon DJ gig at 96.3/WHUR-FM in Washington D.C. this week.
The urban AC station, with a musical mix similar to Atlanta's Majic 107.5/97.5, had aired Michael Baisden until he left over a contract dispute with his syndicator last month. Instead of filling his space with Baisden's syndicated replacement Skip Murphy, as Majic has done, the Howard University commercial station has chosen to open it up to different pros.
The search is being dubbed "Washington's Next Big Voice." Ski is the fourth person to try out.
You can listen to Ski live online here from 3 to 7 p.m. EST until Friday.
They've even posted a poll "Should Frank stay or go?" So far, after his first day on air, 77% like him. That's a good sign for Ski. (The poll is a factor but not the final call on a hire. The contest rules note this: "Live auditions are not open to the general public, auditions are by invitation only. Voting in “Washington’s Next Big Voice” is an opinion poll only, which may be used as part of our determination of “Washington’s Next Big Voice.” Only one vote per person per day. The final decision will be at the sole discretion of the Management of WHUR.")
His first topic on day two is based on how he used to live here in the 1980s while in college and how the city seems to have fewer blacks in it than it used to. "Is the city still chocolate city?" he posed to listeners, referencing an old-school term for D.C.
Here's part of the bio they posted:
Frank Ski, former host of top-rated morning show at Atlanta-based radio station V-103 (CBS affiliate), a position held for 14 years (1998 – 2012). But take a look beyond the radio station and you’ll find somewhat of a renaissance man, whose accomplishments and interests are as broad and intriguing as the many subjects he covers every day. With an ever-growing list of talents, Frank Ski is a well-known journalist, producer and DJ, actor, motivational speaker, tireless philanthropist and most importantly – a husband to wife Tanya and father to four boys. Born in Harlem and reared in Miami, Frank continues to transcend barriers of race, creed and culture.
And more good news for Ski: according to realtor.com, his Atlanta eight bedroom, ten-bath mansion (on sale for $1,495,000) has an offer, pending approval.
So if he gets the D.C. job and sells his home, he'll be able to move to D.C. without having to deal with that property. But if he moves, how much time could he put into his restaurant?
