Frank Ski, despite being off the air the past year, has kept his name in play in Atlanta, primarily through his restaurant, suitably named Frank Ski's.
Hot 107.9 airs from his restaurant every Friday and Saturday night, which means his name gets thrown around on Hot dozens of times a week.
Ski left V-103 airwaves Dec. 20, 2012 (and the station hasn't been the same, as noted here). He had an unusually long one-year noncompete clause, reflective of his high compensation and value to the company over 14 years of consistently solid ratings. Ski -- now on in afternoons at WHUR-FM in D.C. and splits his time between D.C. and Atlant - is available to go back on air in Atlanta Dec. 21 though I am not aware of any immediate job offers. (I did see a Radio One executive there. That company owns Majic 107.5/97.5, a possible home for Ski if he were to come back.)
Nonetheless, he held his 10th annual Frank Ski wine auction earlier this month to raise money for his Frank Ski Kids Foundation, which provides scholarships to disadvantaged students and takes kids on trips around the world. The foundation, which is also co-run by his wife Tanya, also hosts a youth football game each year.
He hosted it for the third year in a row at his Buckhead restaurant Frank Ski's.
Impressively, despite not being on air anymore, he drew several hundred people to his restaurant Dec. 8 and brought in $80,000 to his foundation. While that isn't as much as he raised in his peak days, it's still an impressive figure.
Among the celebrities who popped up included Cynthia Bailey and her husband Peter Thomas ("Real Housewives of Atlanta,"), Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, former mayor Bill Campbell, the couple Joseline Hernandez and Stevie J ("Love & Hip Hop Atlanta"), R&B singer Anthony David and rapper Young Jeezy.
Ski hopes to take Atlanta students on another trip in 2014 after taking a break in 2013. His last trip was to the Galapagos Islands in 2012. He brought three students who went on that 2012 trip to the dais to give testimonials on the life-changing impact the trip had on their lives:
- Sabree Harris, Fdtn student Ambassador, Parkview High School
- Brandon Fountain, Fdtn Student Ambassadors, Marist HS
- Anika Carter, Fdtn Student Ambassador, New Manchester HS
He auctioned off wine, trips and a painting by Frank Ski bartender Monica Tookes that rapper Young Jeezy purchased for $3,500.
