Christina Perri must be a happy woman because at last three of the guys in the final solo round sang her beautiful "Jar of Hearts" song - all of them well.
And with only an hour, "Idol" gave us snippets of just a handful of the 43 men. Of them, we know of 16 by name who make it to the final 28, which will later be trimmed to 20.
Two Georgia men given a lot of airtime, Micah Johnson and Matheus Fernandes, failed to make the cut. But I just got confirmation that Gurpreet Singh Sarin, the "Turbinator," went to Northview High School in Johns Creek. (The Fox publicist confirmed what someone in the comments mentioned.)
It appears most of the guys that are going to go live were pretty good though I really feel stutterer Lazaro Arbos is over-rated.
Next week, we get the ladies.
Here''s a quick run through:
Paul Jolley is really really nervous as he begins Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away." A little weak in the opening but closes strong. "You walked out so defeated and that really irritated me," Nicki said. "Give us just one minute of professionalism."
We hear stuttererLazaro Arbos("Edge of Glory" Lady Gaga). He brings more personality and edge than vocal skills.
Curtis Finch Jr. from St. Louis 9"Jar of Hearts" Christina Perri) is someone who left an impression on me yesterday. And he comes back as the Jacob Lusk of 2013. No doubt he'll make it through.
All three make it to the next round.
Devin Velez, who I really liked yesterday, continued to impress tonight with "What a Wonderful World." Gurpreet "Turbinator" Singh Sarin does a really pretty, jazzy "Georgia In My Mind. Cortez Shaw is Mr. R&B works "Sunny."
Matheus Fernandes, from Atlanta, makes a self-deprecating joke about his age, then sings "Stronger." He is pitchy, dawg. "First time I played with a live band like that," he said. Nicki is annoyed by his height jokes: "You don't have to milk that." He cries again. And he doesn't make the cut. Then he cries again. (The spoilers, of course, were correct on that one.) Adam Sanders, who is not on the spoiler list I saw, is in the final 28.
After the break, Nicholas Mathis holds a picture of his daughter as good luck. He seems nervous as he works Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven." He sounds oddly weak, even as he falls to his knees. I think he let his emotions get to him. "I felt like when you said chasing your dream. I felt like you were chasing a song," Keith said. He's a goner and he is upset.
Jimmy Smith and Papa Peachez came next. He sings "You and I" way too low and Nicki is not impressed. He didn't step up. "I'm pretty sure that flame is now completely burnt out," she said. "I'm so disappointed. I don't know why you would choose that song." Jimmy ("Landslide" Fleetwood Mac) shows more passion after the judges told him to show more colors. Johnny Keyser and Vincent Powell also made it through.
Nick Boddington returns from season 11. I vaguely remember him. He goes with the keyboard and does a lovely rendition of "Stars" by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. White guy with keyboard!
Charlie Askew, the awkward kid does some jumping jacks, then jumps on stage. He opts for Gotye because of a girl. He hits it quick and hits it hard. "I'm obsessed with you," Nicki said. "You are so so special." JDand Mathenee Treco also made it through.
Burnell Taylordoes a touching version on "Jar of Hearts," Marvin Calderon does the same song and has a much cleaner voice. Both advance.
Morrow's Micah Johnson, the man with the speech impediment, is next. He picked the sad "I Told You So" by Randy Travis. I enjoyed it. Mariah wanted him to have a different take on the song and he gets cut. What? Rocker Gabe Brown didn't make it. Neither did Nate Tao.
Based on the spoilers, others who made the cut include Charles Watson, Bryant Tadeo, David Oliver Willis, Elijah Liu, Jeff Hermano, Josh Holiday, Joshua Jada Davila, and Kevin Harris.
Ratings Wednesday night dropped again from a week earlier, down to 14.27 million viewers, not much better than last Thursday's ratings. And Thursdays tend to do far worse than Wednesday so expect the ratings to fall below 14 million Thursday night. The 18-49 rating of 4.6 is down sharply from 5.5 last week. In other words, the preciptious popularity fall for "Idol" continues unabated.
I cover local radio and TV for both the print and online editions. I write a blog on the same topics.
