There were three excellent performances, six okay performances and one terrible one, one of the worst in the history of "Idol." But only five ladies make it to the top 20.
Who made it? Tenna Torres is the first one in. Kree Harrison, too. (Duh!) Ditto with Angela Miller, followed by Amber Holcolmb and Adriana Latonio.
Kree was easily my favorite of the night followed by Angela and Amber. Those were the only three I thought were gimmes for the top 5.
Our hometown girl from Johns Creek/Duluth Isabelle just missed the cut. (Lots of boos for that move.) I liked her better than Tenna but it was an understandable close call.
Kamaria Ousley had one of the most horrendous performances I've ever heard on the show. Clearly, she couldn't hear herself and she was way off pitch the entire Kelly Clarkson cover.
And how did the judges do? Keith Urban is one of the best "Idol" has ever had. Why? He's cogent, he's succinct, he's smart about his critiques, always on point, even if you don't always have to agree with him. Nicki? She may have noticed how over-ripe she could be during the auditions so she's tone that back and has left a fine, colorful center. Love her as a judge. Randy? He's upped his game. He's a bit sharper than he has been in the past. Mariah: Oh boy. They inexplicably gave her the pimp spot and she is left with little to say. She is wordy and dull at the same time. They need to put her second or third, not last.
Jenny Beth Willis (Baton Rouge auditions, 17, junior, Owingsville, Ky., Trisha Yearwood's "Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love") - She's pretty good with a strong final note but the performance wasn't a show stopper. She is very very pale. Keith: "I had these mixed feelings - not the best song for you but I loved this effortless confidence. Nicki: "I liked your voice but I didn't think you came alive until the end. You could have had more fun with the song." Randy: "It felt a little jerky." Mariah: "You could be more dynamic during the verses." Grade: B OUT
Tenna Torres (Queens, N.Y., 28, promotional model who was part of Camp Mariah, Natasha Bedingfield "Soulmate") - Torch singer saddled with an incredibly boring song. Is there a melody in there? She gave it her all but is her all good enough? Keith: "I particularly liked the end. A good controlled moment. I liked the diversity of emotion." Nicki: "There's no tone like that in the business. The hair -lose the hair. It ages her." Randy: "This is how you do it. You connected with the emotion of the song." Mariah: "This was all you. You gave every bit of your emotion." Grade: B IN
Adriana Latonio (Anchorage, Alaska, 17, Aretha Franklin "Ain't No Way" ) I don't think she got much airtime at all. She's very poised, confident Filipino teen and gives a very old-school R&B take on an old-school R&B song. She misses a few notes and her voice isn't nearly as pure as the person she'd remind you of last year: Jessica Sanchez. Keith: "Your emotions bely your age." Nicki: "I did not see one ounce of fear in you." Randy: "This girl is born to do it." Mariah: "I really loved how you came through with your version of the song." Grade: B-plus IN
Brandy Hotard (Port Allen, La., nurse, Travis Tritt "Anymore") - Another boring slow song but at least people are singing songs never heard on "Idol" before. I found her more compelling than Jenny Beth Willis. Her ending was especially strong. Keith:"Your voice is really really good and was good in that song. My only issue with that perfomance was an emotional connection inconsistency. It's pretty heartbreaking and you were sometimes you were happy with it." Nicki: "That was a pageant delivery of a song. It did not feel real." Randy: "You didn't have the right connection to that lyric. It didn't tell me enough who you are." Brandy admitted she had a hard time connecting with the lyric. So why pick that song? Grade: B-plus OUT
Shubha Vedula (17, Lady Gaga "The Edge of Glory) - She decides to really slow down this Lady Gaga up front. She is trying way too hard to be different, to "impress." She is a bit better once she gets off from the piano. I do give her credit for shaking up the arrangement. Very risky. It was a mixed bag for me. She bobbed up and down in an annoying way, too. Keith: "It was confusing. There were so many things going on. Despite it, your voice came powering through." Nicki: "Prepare to boo again. It felt like a mashup of Christina Aguilera and the Gangnum Style guy. Very confusing." Randy: "You're 17. You really have unbelievable talent. You don't need too many runs. You have to feel it. I would have liked you to stay at the piano." Mariah: "When you were at the piano, there was something.. it was less forced." Grade: B/B-plus OUT
Kamaria Ousley (Oakland, Calif., background singer like Melinda Doolittle, Kelly Clarkson's "Mr. Know It All") - Yikes. Pitchy, dawg! Is she even close to on key? That is by far the worst performance of the night. I'm in pain listening to this. Keith: "That was not a great song for you tonight. You can really sing. You've made it this far. That connection was not there." Nicki: "You look very nicely styled today. I love your outfit... What I never noticed was this throaty, twangy thing you were doing. Did you put that on for this song. It didn't work, babe." Randy: "It never caught on. Worst performance since you were in the competition. Nothing redeemable about it." Mariah: "You're very adorable." Kamaria later said she couldn't hear herself on stage. Too bad. Grade: D OUT
Kree Harrison (Nashville demo singer, Patti Griffin "Up to the Mountain" ) - Visually, she's very plain jane. She dressed tonight way too casually. But vocally, she has a professional voice. I can see why she became a demo singer as a result. Great vocalist. Transcendent final note. Keith is thrilled and gives his first standing o: "Such a natural born singer! You don't over-try. You don't have any desperation. You have an effortless authenticity." Nicki: "I'd be afraid if I was any of the other girls tonight... There's a mystery in you that can't be explained. When you sing a song, you make love to a song. You get up there and you are completely clothed. Something about you is so sexy when you sing." Randy: "She connects with the lyric... You sang a beautiful song and it was effortless." Mariah: "You're lost in the song. That is a beautiful thing to watch. It's unaffected." Grade: A IN
Angela Miller (R. Kelly "If I Could Turn Back the Hands of Time") - I keep thinking "Solid Gold" with her look and her hair. But she puts on a tour de force performance. She brings it from beginning to end. And for once, someone didn't opt for a big end note. Keith: "You have a big big gift." Nicki: "Nothing is going to compare with that orignial song... Don't over do it. You're already a top contender. Don't force anything. Your voice is unmatched. You're beautiful. You're unmatched." Randy: "You are one of my favorites." Mariah: "Your potential is limitless." Grade: A/A-minus IN
Isabelle (Johns Creek, GA, 22, playing up the weight issue again, Billie Holliday "God Bless the Child") - Always a risk going old school on your first full song on "Idol." It just dates her. We want a modern "Idol." Not a 1950s "Idol." It felt very lounge-ish. She also misses a few nights in the lower register, unnecessarily. It was solid but not great. Nicki: "You look very pretty. You sound very pretty. Be proud." Randy: "Props on getting your health together... You have a big voice. It was very old fashioned." Mariah: "If you kept a simple arrangement, it would have been a different thing." Grade: B-plus OUT
Amber Holcolmb (Houston, 18, assistant teacher, cut in Vegas season 11, more confident this year, she says, "My Funny Valentine") - What is this, old-school theme night? Another really old song. It's very theatrical but very clean. I think she can be molded more modern, though. She's young. Vocally, she has huge potential. She has a spark about her. Keith: "That is such great technically. All the breath control and making it look so easy. You made it timeless. You knocked it out of the park." Nicki: "Legs for days! Pretty little dimples... That vocal was A-plus plus plus but I'm wondering if that inner shine is going to shine through the TV." Randy: "Yo! The thing is Nicki. You have to believe it before anybody at home believes it. I think you have doubted yourself. You should stop that... You made the most important run. You weren't oversinging before it." (Hello, Shubha!) Mariah: "I loved your interpretation." Grade: A-minus IN
