Atlanta-based TruTV is on a roll with a string of hits lately, from "Lizard Lick Towing" to "Hardcore Pawn."
Now it's hoping Shaquille O'Neal, who already does NBA commentary for sister station TNT, will give them another lift with his new show "Upload with Shaq," a viral video compilation show with sketches and jokes. It debuts Thursday, Feb. 21, at 10:30 p.m.
Think "Tosh.O" meets "Web Soup" meets "Ridiculousness."
In other words, human beings can't help but turn into giggling 12 years olds watching people get their stuff smashed or cute dogs doing tricks or stupid stunts gone awry. Why were "The Three Stooges" so popular?
And thanks to the Web, we don't even need folks to send in VHS tapes a la "America's Funniest Home Videos," which has been around since the late 1980s. Producers can just troll YouTube for material.
Shaq - who retired from the NBA last year after a hugely successful basketball career and now lives in Atlanta - has never stopped building his brand, be it a comedy tour ("Shaq Presents All-Star Comedy Jam"), a recent autobiography ("Shaq Uncut"), a PhD (you can call him Dr. O'Neal now) and even a mobile app game ("Shaq Down"). And he's done reality shows before, including "Shaq Vs." on ABC in 2009-2010.
"I'm a humorous guy," Shaq said in a recent interview. "I look at the Internet. There are a billion, trillion humorous clips. TruTv is a humorous network. They're kind of out there. The Shaq brand is kind of out there. We consider this a beautiful marriage."
Over ten episodes, he teamed up with Gary Owen and Godfrey, two stand-up comics who have been friends and done his tour. "We bring families together," he said. "Adults can sit with their kids and laugh."
Shaq readily admits this show concept is hardly original. "I wouldn't say it's different," he said. "It's similar. We try to make our own different twists. You can put a different twist on any clip. My twist on the clips is definitely going to make you laugh."
While he doesn't fashion himself to be a comedian like Godfrey and Owen, he said he makes up for it by willing to do whatever it takes to get that laugh: "I'm confident."
He's even placed his toes back into films. Not "Kazaam 2." He's friends with Adam Sandler, who placed him in the upcoming "Grown Ups 2."
"I think he's funny as hell," Shaq said. "He thinks I'm even funnier. I know all the lines to his movies."
And while he did a video of himself singing along to Beyonce during the Super Bowl half-time show, he does admit he has his limitations: "I'm a terrible singer. My voice is way too deep."
