There were rumors in 2011 into 2012 that Atlanta super media mogul Tyler Perry would launch his own cable network.
But instead, he decided to help out an even bigger media mogul's burgeoning network: Oprah Winfrey.
OWN has not only placed two new Atlanta-based Perry series in production ("Love Thy Neighbor" and 'The Haves and Have Nots") but has also picked up "For Better Or Worse," which had been on TBS, for a third season. It's a low-risk move since "For Better or Worse" has a built-in fan base.
OWN has also purchased the rights to 45 episodes of "For Better or Worse" already in the can. The relationship dramedy stars Tasha Smith and Michael Jai White.
These would be OWN's first scripted efforts using a familiar brand name in Tyler Perry. Ultimately, it's mutually beneficial for the two stars to attach themselves at the hip on the production side.
Atlanta-based TBS, in the meantime, has backed off from African-American sitcoms the past two years after airing Perry's first three scripted programs, including "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns." Repeats of those shows continue to air on the network.
TBS, besides "Conan," has become the "Big Bang Theory" repeat network during prime-time. The show airs five nights a week now, pulling in huge numbers and fueling theĀ sitcom's original airings on CBS to record ratings in recent weeks.
