Sorry. I've been helping my wife with an event of hers and won't be able to get to my own recap until later this morning.
The ladies are killing it vs. the guys. This week may have arguably been even better than last week. And this meant some women were dumped that are far better than many of the men who made it through last Thursday. This gender splitting is not a good thing at all in this case.
In fact, I generally liked all the performances tonight. There wasn't a true dud in the bunch with Melinda the worst. I liked Breanna, Rachel and Jett all equally as my personal favorites.
We can only hope there are some wildcard entries at some point because Rachel and Jett deserve to be in the top 20. (Even Juliana could have an argument to be there, too.)
The five who made it were two early favorites Janelle Arthur and Candice Glover, two pop princesses Aubrey Cleland and Breanna Steer plus crazy Zoanette Johnson. They clearly kept her around for entertainment purposes and to keep the conversation going.
Randy Jackson is obsessed with the phrase "moments" this year. While Nicki Minaj likes to call ladies "ladybugs" and cares much about "connecting" to a song. Mariah Carey is clearly trying to reign in the excess words, though that doesn't make what she says any more interesting. It just means less of it, which is good. Keith Urban has varied his comments enough that I haven't found an obvious pattern.
Melinda Ademi, 19, Yonkers, N.Y., made it to Hollywood season 10 ("Nobody's Perfect" Jessie J) - She has good stage presence and a pretty face but the vocal performance was just meh, especially in the beginning. It just felt sloppy across the board and her lower tones felt forced. Her final 10 seconds were the best but it was too little, too late. Keith: "You have so much raw potential." Nicki: "Angela sang it last week and it was so much connected. I liked it. I didn't love it." Randy: "You didn't have enough big moments." Mariah: "By the end of the song, you were where you needed to be." Grade: B-minus OUT
Candice Glover, travel agent who made it to Hollywood last year. ("Natural Woman" Aretha Franklin) - Kelly Clarkson rocked this song out 11 years ago. Vocally, this was an excellent performance though given the nature of the song, she seemed to take it too seriously, without that glint of fun that Clarkson had. Keith: "That was a great song choice. It's the way you sing. You're a natural singer!" Nicki: "Your confidence is worth a billion words." Randy: "You're one of my favorites... You're grown since [last year.] Now you believe you belong here. It was good, not your best. Feel free." [In other words, loosen up!] Grade: B-plus/A-minus IN
Juliana Chahayed, ("Skyscraper" Demi Lovato) - I have almost no memory of her. She has a pretty, breathy tone. She is much more engaging to me than Melinda. An awfully oversized guitar, as Keith noted. Keith: "You were struggling with pitch in a lot of places. But you're 15. The nervousness is there. There's a purity about the tone of your voice. It's a mix of Jewel and a bit of Taylor. I believe you when you sing." Nicki: "You are one of the only people who has a signature sound to your voice. You have an easy thing about you. You sing very timid. it works for what you do. But it may not work with all these bigger voices." Randy: "What I liked is the honesty of your delivery." Mariah: "There was an angelic quality that I felt." Grade: B-plus/A-minus OUT
Jett Hermano, Seattle, legal assistant ("Only Girl (In the World) - Rihanna) - She has a very delicate, pretty voice. I was impressed with the depth of the performance on the piano. Keith: "I loved your unique arrangement of the song." Nicki: "I liked the arrangement. I liked the breathy falsetto stuff. I thought it was going to climax to something and I didn't feel that." Randy wanted more tempo. Mariah called her intriguing and didn't mind going "sick at the end." Grade: A-minus OUT
Cristabel Clack, ("No One" Alicia Keys) - She has an interesting graininess to her voice but she seems to be forcing it a bit too much. I can sense her nerves. Then she goes all crazy with the runs at the end. Too much! Keith: "I think you've got crazy potential." Nicki: "Umm... I liked that song for you. You do have a unique voice. I loved the rasp. Sometimes, the rasp today got a little more out of control." Randy: "You are on point. I love the rasp." Grade: B OUT
Aubrey Cleland ("Sweet Dreams' Beyonce) - Again, a recent R&B song slowed down for maxium dramatics. She's young and model pretty, who could be packaged in the pop world. Her voice is clean as a whistle. I can't say it's terribly distinctive. I was almost bored at times, though. Keith: "The balance you have of poise and fire in your voice." Nicki: "I am obsessed with you. You feel like a current artist." Randy: "You are a great commercial artist. You look amazing. You command the stage." Mariah: "You're limitless." Grade: B-plus IN
Rachel Hale ("Nothing But the Water" Grace Potter and the Nocturnals) - Her big notes didn't quite work but otherwise, I found her commanding and fun at the same time. She has drive and determination built into this performance. Keith: "The song may have gotten on top of you at times. But I love your spirit and the way you sing." Nicki: "Where did this burst of crazy confidence come from? I'm looking at my ladybug come to life." Randy: "I'm happy you chose to an uptempo song. I love seeing this side of you." Mariah didn't think this was her best. Grade: A-minus OUT
Breanna Steer (victim of Hurricane Isaac, "Bust the Windows" Jazmine Sullivan) - Another super-confidence performance, a very clean vocal with attitude to boot. Keith: "I liked the whole vibe you had in it." Nicki: "Miss Little Ladybug, work, work, work! You and Aubrey right now record deal could go out, shoot videos, be number one on the charts. You weren't here trying to get our acceptance. You were an artist at your own show." Randy: "You got the whole package." Grade: A-minus/A IN
Janelle Arthur ("Just a Kiss" Lady Antebellum) - In the earlier rounds, she was one of my favorites. This means the bar is way high for her. This was merely okay for her. I still liked it but it may have been the song. Keith: "It's one of those songs where there's three of them. It's a limiting melody in the chorus." He felt the song didn't give her a chance to soar. Nicki: "That fell a little bit flat. I'm upset. You were disconnected. You don't have to overdo it. Don't try too hard." Randy: "You are my favorite country singer in this competition. So because you're really pure and real. That song was not the right song for you." Mariah thought a simpler song might have worked. Grade: B-plus IN
Zoanette Johnson - 20, Tulsa, Okl. health care specialist and Liberian refugee ("Circle of Life" Elton John) - She is an entertainer first, a vocalist second. No way she'd get anywhere on "The Voice." She has far less vocal control than, say, Fantasia. She runs on emotion, not pinpoint accuracy. But you can't take your eyes off of her. Nicki: "That song matches who you are." Randy: "America. Zoanette showed you why she's here. That spirit that you have is really the spirit of a lion of a champion. It's infectious." Grade: B-plus
In other "Idol" news: Phillip Philips' latest single 'Gone, Gone, Gone" will be the going-away song every time a contestant gets eliminated. Past years, the going away song has included Daniel Powter's "Bad Day," Scotty McCreery covering Alan Jackson's "Please Remember Me" and David Cook's cover of Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)"
I cover local radio and TV for both the print and online editions. I write a blog on the same topics.
