"American Idol" contestants over 11 seasons have sung a variety of tunes from Elvis to the Beatles to Mariah to Adele.
But there are certain songs that are just plain tired. I want them banned forever.
Not that they are all necessarily horrible songs. Sometimes, they simply are jinxed tunes. Or songs we regulars have heard way too many times over the years. A few are defined so closely to a particular singer, they should be avoided at all costs.
And the website whatnottosing.com (which has a database of 993 tunes sung by contestants over the years) notes that singing songs already sung on the show tend to get rated worse than fresh songs. There is generally diminishing returns and frequently, people will compare the performances with those of past contestants on top of the original artist.
Here are 10 songs I think should never be heard again on "Idol." (I've also heard Nigel Lythgoe say there are way too many Adele songs being sung in auditions. Understood. And there was a time when everybody wanted to sing Alicia Keys' "Fallen" in auditions, too. And what's up with "Bohemian Rhapsody." But I digress...)
- Whitney Houston "I Have Nothing" (performed eight times) - This is not a bad song but in my mind, hardly her most memorable song by any stretch.I can see why singers from Trenyce to Vonzell Solomon to Lakisha Jones have tackled it. It starts modestly, then builds to a big crescendo, even in truncated form. But really - eight times? Enough already!
- Phil Collins "Against All Odds" (performed seven times) - This 1984 pop nugget also has quiet verses and an emotive chorus. But it has been the kiss of death for way too many singers to date. And people generally hated most of the performances: Corey Clark, George Huff, Jessica Sierra, Paige Miles. The most popular version was done by Scott Savol, which says everything. Keep this one in the karaoke rooms, please.
- Jeff Buckley/Leonard Cohen "Hallelujah" (three times) - I love this song so much that even a bad version of it is pretty good. Jason Castro defined his stay on the show with it. It was Tim Urban's best performance of a very thin resume season nine. Then Lee DeWyze solidified his mystifying trip to winner-dom that same season by singing it again. Ugh. Let it be.
- John Lennon's "Imagine" (six times) - Lennon's most defining song, with meaningful lyrics that works great with a piano. but this was David Archuleta's defining performance of his season. Joshua Ledet doing it again last year was unncessary. Imagine we've heard this enough.
- Jennifer Holliday's "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" (performed six times) - This is one of the most over-the-top, crazy, in-your-face songs of all time. Lakisha Jones blew it out of the water, followed closely by Tamyra Gray and Jessica Sanchez. Nick Mitchell did a funny, jokey version of it. And Jennifer Hudson, of course, redefined it in the film "Dreamgirls." Time to move on, ladies.
- Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" (four times) - This was Katharine McPhee's big moment season five (not counting her knee-drop on "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." Castro did the acoustic, Hawaiian version quite well two years later. I'd say no point in tackling this one again, though I do love it so.
- Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (seven times) - I abhor this song with all core of my body. Annoying as all get out. So I've blocked out all seven versions of this, from Josh Gracin to Allison Iraheta to Sanchez. Blech, blech, triple blech.
- Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" (six times) - Bucky Covington surprised everyone with his country take on this song five years ago, and Phillip Phillips pulled off an interesting acoustic version. I can see the appeal: it's classic and upbeat. I just have to say enough is enough.
- Vicki Sue Robinson/Gloria Estefan "Turn the Beat Around" (five times) - I never particularly liked this song, especially all that syncopated scatting. Again, Sanchez did this one, along with Diana DeGarmo and sadly, Haley Scarnato (who received a whopping score of 17/100 on WhatNotToSing.com.) Turn this beat off!
- Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (six times) - Almost every "Big Chill" song has been given the twice or thrice over on "Idol," but this one has been especially appealing to contestants. What I find fascinating is the variety of contestans who have tackled it: Fantasia, Kevin Covais, Casey Abrams and last year, Skylar Laine. I have nothing against this song per se but it's been through the ringer enough times on "Idol."
Tell me your picks of songs you can't stand anymore and wish would disappear forever from the "Idol" playlist.
