"American Idol" Baton Rouge audition #4 recap

Burnell Taylor

Burnell Taylor received a standing ovation from the judges Thursday night.

By Rodney Ho

Although this is the first hour-long episode after three two-hour versions, Baton Rouge, LA brought an impressive amount of soul, mostly from the state itself. Over 11 seasons, I don't think Louisiana has been well represented at all. But perhaps that will change this year.

If spoilers are to be believed, five of the singers we heard tonight make it to the top 40.  That's more than Charlotte's two-hour episode Wednesday, which drew 16.1 million viewers and a 5.5 rating for 18-49 year olds. (That's also down 18% from 19.7 million total viewers and a 6.5 18-49 rating for the comparable episode a year ago)

Total who made it through from Baton Rouge: 35.  We heard 10 of them, which is a lot for a one-hour episode.

Next week: San Antonio and Long Beach, Calif.

Up first:

Megan Miller, 22, Ethel, LA (“Somethings Got a Hold On Me” Etta James) - So she had an accident that required surgery? Nope. "Idol" audition first. She brings a little style, a little pizazz, and real skills to the table. 'Undeniable superstar," Nicki said. Mariah: "Endearing."

Charlie Askew,  17, Little Rock, AK ( “Breakthrough” Queen) - He has social awkwardness. "Through music, I found an outlet," he said. The little redhead has a pretty, theatrical voice and a soulful inner self at the same time. "I like your spirit," Nicki said. "Seemingly dark, strange, but cool," Randy said. "Like Bowie," Keith said.

Maddie Assel – 17, Centreville, VA  (“Oh Darling” by The Beatles) - She is soulful and strong across the board. I'm an instant fan. She said her influences are Beyonce, Adele and Haley Reinhart.

Bad singers are dispensed with in a quick montage.

Paul Jolley - 22, Palmersville, TN  ( “I Won’t Let Go” Rascal Flatts) - Great voice but I'm not sure I'll remember him by the time Hollywood rolls around. "I like your vibe," Nicki said. "You exuded confidence," Mariah said. "Great crafted vocal performance," Keith said.

Chris "Mushroom" Barthel - 24, Metairie, LA (“If I Had You” Adam Lambert) - He's all about fun but he can't sing. Later!

Dr. Calvin Peters, 27,  Fort Worth, TX (“Whenever, Wherever, Whatever” Maxwell) - This doctor has a lovely soprano voice. "You have more technique than a lot of poeple we've sent to Hollywood," Nicki said.

Montage of Hollywood bound ladies: Michelle Montezeri, 19, Orlando, FL; Breanna Steer, 18,  Laplace, LA; Brandy Hotard, 26, Point Allen, LA.

Dustin Watts, 27, Albany, LA (“Shes Every Woman” by Garth Brooks) The firefighter brings an easygoing style to his country vibe. "You have great style and confidence," Keith said.

Burnell Taylor , 19, New Orleans, LA (“I’m Here” from "The Color Purple")  - A tour de force in power and emotion. Keith is especially tickled. "You made me cry!" Mariah said. "Burnell's tone is ridiculous. I felt every word you said. Just spectacular!" Nicki: "That's what we came for." This man is not only Hollywood bound but has a likely ticket to the live rounds.
